Personality: When she was a young child, River was exceptionally bright and was put into graduate study programs when she was just 14. She knew physics backwards and forwards by this time, and felt like she needed something more to sustain her thirst for knowledge. So she was sent to the Academy, run by the Alliance which was supposed to be for the best students. However what they were really doing was breeding the perfect assassin, mostly by doing experiments on her brain, including stripping her amygdala, and was able to implant heavy suggestions into her so that upon being given a cue, she would be under their control. She was also trained to be a weapon, physically making her body ready to be able to kill groups of people at a time.
It was also possible that she had a bit of psychic abilities as a kid, but the Alliance honed in her skills so that she was able to read people's minds and pick up their emotions. However it has left her unable to distinguish her own emotions from other people's and unable to process them all. She can't control herself, she doesn't ever know what she's thinking and goes through periods where she is lucid and able to understand and be understood. However sometimes there are periods where she relapses and has very bad periods. She's gotten much better though upon her deep dark secret (that the Alliance was creating reavers accidentally) had been released and all of the dead on Miranda could finally rest in peace.
River loves to dance, she loves pretty things. She's very fascinated by things around her, and people around her. She gets along most with her brother Simon, and Kaylee who has decided to look out for her. She often gets into trouble, and breaks things. Generally though, she's much better off than she used to be. However she is still deeply disturbed.
Canon Point Where Character Deviates: After taking down the reavers in Serenity, River learns that Simon has died from his injuries and she decides to leave on her own instead of going back on the ship.
History: River was so intelligent as a child that she made her very smart brother look like an idiot. By three, she was correcting her brother's spelling. She was a genius, and could find the flaw in anyone's teaching. She often made up stories with her brother, and they were very close. The Tam's had a lot of money and wanted Simon to be the best doctor that he could possibly be. When she was old enough, River was signed up for the Academy, a very elite educational institution where she would learn to become something amazing. Instead the Academy was a scientific lab set up by the Blue Sun Corp in relation to the Alliance.
Soon Simon was getting very weird letters from his sister, about things that they never did together and people they never met. The letters just didn't make any sense. Eventually he realized that they were code for something bad. Something was happening to River. In reality, they were brainwashing her, and cutting into her brain. They were making her a reader, stripping down her amygdala and puncturing her brain so that she could read the feelings and memories of others. Of course poking around into her brain made her completely crazy and psychotic as well. Her psychosis lead her to see things and hear things, some real and some just in her head.
Eventually Simon was able to get enough money, resources and everything else to help his sister escape. He rescued her and went on the run. It meant stowing her in a box and sedating her. The pair found themselves on Serenity, a firefly class transport. The crew headed by Captain Mal Reynolds didn't want them at first, but eventually the pair settled in. As much as River could though, because she was hysterical and she rambled and nothing ever made any sense. She didn't know that the Academy had bread her to fight and kill until she was triggered one day in a bar. Simon and River were being kicked off Serenity but instead she nearly killed everyone in the bar and suddenly they knew where she was.
It ended with a huge fight with the Operative, and finding out what the Alliance didn't want anyone to know. River knew that the government had made reavers and caused whole planets to die by placing pax in the air to make people settle and calm themselves. Simon died in that battle, and it crushed River, but she honestly felt a little more sane. So she left Serenity and started trying to live for herself.

WEAKNESSES: having been experimented on, her amygdala has been stripped, she feels all emotions of people and doesn't know how to control it. She doesn't know how to control her own emotions so she comes across as psychotic or really just plain crazy.
CANON POINT: Sometime after the movie Serenity.
WHY HAS YOUR CHARACTER CAUGHT THE EYE OF THE COLLECTOR?: River's so unique, between her genius and her physical skills, of course he'd want to keep her. Plus she's crazy.
